Swizz and Alicia share art

On March 9, my friend Anwar Curtis and I drove to Brooklyn to observe hip-hop. But instead of attending a concert, we visited two exhibits.

Before going to the Biggie Experience, an exhibit about the iconic Notorious B.I.G., we witnessed the “Giants” exhibit, a collection of art owned by Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys. “Giants,” located at the Brooklyn Museum until July 7, offers art by more than 100 artists including Deborah Roberts, Esther Mahlangu and Jamel Shabazz.

Overall, it was a day replete with culture. As a Jamaican American, I felt proud of Alicia Keys (granddaughter of Jamaicans), Biggie (son of Jamaicans) and Brooklyn (home to many Jamaican immigrants). Our last stop that day? Golden Crust on Fulton Ave., a Jamaican bakery located around the corner from Biggie’s former home.
