In honor of the 20th anniversary of Nas’ epic debut album Illmatic, the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival will feature the world premiere of Time is Illmatic. This documentary chronicles the rise of Nas’ album.
Like literary works from the Harlem Renaissance, Illmatic paints vivid pictures of plight in the urban community. Nas, who was wise beyond his years, was only in his late teens when he crafted this masterpiece. Directed by multimedia artist One9, written by Erik Parker, and produced by One9, Parker and Anthony Saleh, the doc will premier on April 16.
Here’s what Parker said when we asked if Time is Illmatic will hit movie theaters: “We have not signed a distribution deal for the doc, but we are premiering it at Tribeca Film Fest. We plan to go with a theatrical run sometime this year.” Parker was an editor of Vibe magazine and hosted the TV show The Parker Report.
