Up close and personal with Beanie

You know B. Sige in the third lane/Gramps still praying, working on my nerves man/Like, ‘Son you gotta get your soul clean/Before they blow them horns like Coltrane.’

This is the beginning of Beanie Sigel’s verse for “What We Do,” a timeless confessional about street hustling. Beans wrapped up his set at Appalachian Brewery Co. with this Just Blaze-produced hit. The crowd at the Harrisburg-based venue went into a frenzy during “What We Do.”

And still we grind from the bottom/Just to make it to the bottom, Beanie continues in the song during his concert on Nov. 13.

Beanie is known for injecting emotion into every bar and delivery. At the show, he rapped intensely in his a cappella performance, a segue for “Feel It in the Air.” Then he gave fans a throwback with 1998’s “More Money, More Cash, More Hoes,” a Swizz Beatz-assisted track. During “Roc the Mic,” the Broad Street Bully reenacted his video by bringing more people on stage.

Beanie shed some weight, so I didn’t notice him at first when I saw him in the bathroom. Before he left the John, he dropped an impromptu freestyle. (Then we talked about his previous performance in Philly that our website covered.)

State Property’s Young Gunz got the crowd turnt up when they gave a surprise performance for “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop” and “No Better Love,” to name a few songs. (Beanie leads the Philly-based rap group State Property). This is not the first time the Young Gunz visited the Harrisburg area. In the early 2000s, Chris and Neef performed at a club in Steelton. And State Property members Freeway and Peedi Peedi have made appearances at Villa in downtown Harrisburg.

Some local acts opened up for Beans. With their energetic set and dope music, Maschine Life’s LRD RA (aka Dise), Rawston George and Drew Tyrell were some of the standout local acts. The legendary DJ Smitty, another opening act, displayed his usual DJing acrobatics.
