The 1979 film, The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh, tells the story of a struggling pro basketball team. Pittsburgh-based rhyme spitter Wiz Khalifa didn’t rescue the city, but he definitely put them on the hip-hop map. Continue reading ‘Nobody beats the Wiz’

Badu charged for video

Photo of Erykah Badu by Leon Laing.

This past Friday wasn’t so good for Erykah Badu.

On Good Friday, (April 5), the Dallas Police department charged Badu for disorderly conduct for her new video.  The po-po also fined her $500. Since 1997, Badu has been changing the game with her left-of-center music. If you haven’t seen her new video for her single “Window Seat,” you gotta check it out. Inspired by Matt and Kim, the singer continues to push the artistic envelope by disrobing in public. We’ll always love Big Poppa

Today marks the 13th anniversary of The Notorious B.I.G.’s death. My parents are longtime friends with Voletta Wallace (Biggie’s mom), so I had the pleasure of meeting B.I.G., his family and friends. I was a child when I visited Biggie’s Brooklyn home, so I can’t remember much about the visits except that he used to wear glasses. Continue reading ‘We’ll always love Big Poppa’

Omarion in Philly

I don’t know if Omarion will be able to ever top his video for “Touch.” But the video for his new single “Speedin” still does a good job of illustrating the song. Check O out when performs at Philly’s Theatre of Living Arts on March 6.

Snoop Dogg
The year is young—but I think it’s safe to say that Snoop Dogg’s “I Wanna Rock” is going to be one of the best singles of 2010. Snoop, like Jay-Z, is a rap vet, but he’s agruably one of the most relevant artists in today’s rap game. Check out  Snoop when he performs in Philly on Feb. 28. You can also download his “I Wanna Rock” (remix featuring Jigga) right here. Continue reading ‘Upcoming events’
