Events: October 2009

DJ Hero hits stores Oct. 27, the same day the BET Hip Hop Awards 2009 is aired. DJ Hero is available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation consoles and the Wii.

Local concerts/events
Oct 2
: Lancaster County-based rapper Stainless Steele, a longtime collaborator with DJ Image, holds a release party for his mixtape, My Top Friends Are Beat Makers. The event takes place at The Shoppe Revival in Lancaster. Graphic designer Andy Musser displays his artwork during the event. The party runs from 6 p.m. to midnight.

Oct. 3: Maxwell appears at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. The falsetto singer helped to usher in neo-soul in the late ’90s. Time: 7:30 p.m.

Ghostface Killah performs at Philly-based Trocedero. Ghost released Ghostdini: The Wizard of Poetry in Emerald City on Sept. 29. Time for concert is 8 p.m.

Oct. 8-10: Founded by CMK Entertainment in 2009, Philadelphia Fashion Week is a three-day celebration of fashion, food, and arts and culture. The runway shows feature designs from student designers enrolled in the Art Institute of Philadelphia, Philadelphia University and Moore College of Art & Design. Click here for more info.

Oct. 9: On the heels of the release for Blueprint 3, Jay-Z appears at Penn State University. Promoter Live Nation just added N.E.R.D., J. Cole and Wale. Click here for a free download of Wale’s song, “World Tour,” ft. Jazmine Sullivan. Jigga’s show begins at 8 p.m. at the Bryce Jordan Center at University Park.

Asher Roth returns to his hometown of Pennsylvania. Raised in Morrisville, he now resides in the ATL. Roth and I both attended West Chester University, but I graduated before the rap newcomer began college. Catch Roth at Crocodile Rock, Allentown, at 7 p.m.

Oct 10: Comedian Tracy Morgan appears at The Pullo Center in York. Time: 7:30 p.m.

Trey Songz, an R. Kelly protégé and collobarator with overnight celebrity Drake, performs at Indiana University. Time: Unvailable.

Oct 13: Speaking of R. Kelly, Kells drops his new album, Untitled, the same day he performs in Upper Darby’s Tower Theater. Time: 8 p.m.

Oct 16: Renowned jazz artist Najee performs at the Whitaker Center For Science and the Arts in Harrisburg. Time: 8 p.m.

Oct. 17: windchILL is one of the hardest working rappers in Central Pa. Support him and other local artists as they rock the mic during windchILL’s album release party. The event, held at Harrisburg’s Appalachian Brewing Co., promotes the new album Self Medication. Attendants will receive a free mixtape. Doors open at 8 p.m., and showtime is 9 p.m.

Oct. 23: Powerhouse brings another A-list roster to Philly: Jay-Z, Keri Hilson, Jadakiss, Trey Songz, Day 26, Pleasure P, Mario and Jeremih. The time for Powerhouse 2009, held at the Wachovia Center, is 8 p.m. 

Cancelled shows
Dec. 18: Kanye West and Lady Gaga just cancelled their Fame Kills tour. Live Nation was going to hold the concert at Philadelphia’s Wachovia Center at 8 p.m. Did Ye’s VMA debacle hurt ticket sales?
