The British singer, who released the definitive album called Back to Black, faded to black today. As of press time, cause of Amy Winehouse’s death is unknown. She was 27.

I had the pleasure of covering her in concert before her untimely departure. During the 2007 Black Lily concert in Philly, Winehouse gave a surprise performance, singing an extended version of “Rehab.”

Despite her personal problems, including her drug addiction, the white soul singer made her mark with her sophomore CD Back to Black. To cook up the album, Winehouse wore her heart on her sleeve, while super producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi created the airtight, throwback beats. Back to Back peaked at No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200.

According to CNN, Winehouse died at the same age as four other music legends. Club 27 consists of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison. They each died of drug overdoses when they were 27. Kurt Cobain was 27 when he committed suicide, soon after his release from rehab.
