Roy Woods’ two projects, Exis and Waking at Dawn, offer a trap soul sound: ambient and mellow.
So I assumed his concert would be laid back. The show for his Unlocked tour, taking place on Dec. 1 at Philadelphia’s The Foundry, was mellow for the most part. But with his impressive dance moves and interaction with fans, the singer/rapper/songwriter came out of his shell.
Woods, a 20 year old from Brampton, Ontario, came on stage singing the atmospheric “Sonic Boom.” The OVO Sound signee was clad in black pants and a black Waking at Dawn T-shirt. He channeled some of his idols (Michael Jackson, Drake, etc.) in his songs. A fan asked him to sing “All of You,” and Woods obliged. During “Why,” lights got dim and blue. He connected with fans during “Go Go Go.”
After the show, I pulled up to the traffic light near the concert venue. When I heard screaming fans approaching the SUV beside me, I knew Woods was in that vehicle. Then the light turned green, and the SUV peeled off into night. Skrt, skrt, skrt.
