After watching two videos about Kanye West, you’ll see how Kanye came full circle.
On Aug. 29, Chicago-based 107.5 WGCI FM posted their video of a highly anticipated interview with Kanye. Two days after 107.5’s video hit the web, Michael “Big Star” Starling uploaded his video of a Kanye interview on another radio station.
Starling recorded his video 15 years ago (August, 15, 2003, to be exact) while Kanye talked with Power 99 FM’s Come Up Show in Philadelphia. Starling’s video shows how a younger, ambitious and charismatic producer/artist created his own lane.
“[I] had no idea the heights he was going to reach, but I could tell he had hip-hop in his blood,” Starling tells vigoronline.com. “He loved to just rhyme, as evidenced when he just busted out into a rhyme when Q-Deezy put him on the spot and asked him to freestyle. I left that night saying, ‘Kanye is a dope MC.'”
When asked Starling’s favorite Kanye song, he says “All Falls Down” on The College Dropout album.
The Power 99 interview is part of Starling’s 2 Raw for the Streets archives. The videographer started 2 Raw for the Streets during our college days at West Chester University, a place where I got my start as a music journalist.
