“This is my second time in Philly,” Amir Obe told the audience on July 12.
The first time the rapper/singer/producer performed in the City of Brotherly Love was on March 3, 2015, at Theatre of Living Arts. During that time, he opened up for Partynextdoor’s sold-out concert. Although Obe collaborated with Party and produced Drake’s “Star67,” he hasn’t inked a deal yet with Drake’s OVO Sound label.
On July 12, Obe entered Silk City’s stage singing “The Only,” a mellow song replete with strings (think the group The xx). His electronic-infused set also included another joint from Happening in the Grey Area (“Say No More”) and songs from Won’t Love Find in the Hills (“Before the Vomit,” “Took You Seriously” and “One Night Thing”). Growing up in Detroit and Brooklyn inspired the name of his Detrooklyn mixtape.
DJ Hvnlee, Bri Steves and Milton Musiq opened for Obe. Aside from Heineken, Aran Hart and Yusuf Muhammad made the show possible. Free Heineken beer and good music—it doesn’t get better than this.
